Sebastian Büsching from Germany wins the first prize

Sebastian Büsching ganador del Francisco MantecónThe Berlin-based artist Sebastían Büsching has won the first prize of 10,000 euros in the ninth edition of the Francisco Mantecón International Poster Design Competition. His poster will also be used throughout the coming year as the corporate image of Terras Gauda, the winery that organises the event in partnership with the Vigo Port Authority. The first runner-up prize, sponsored by the Port of Vigo Foundation, was the designer Rafaella Troiero (Italy), while the second runner-up was Diana Celeste Santos (Portugal), with a special mention for the Inikernet Solutions studio (San Sebastián). Each received a cheque for 2,000 euros.

This year, Terras Gaudas reported an increase in the number of artists taking part, with entries received from 58 countries. For the first time, all the posters have been exhibited for a month at the Maritime Centre. There was a particularly large number of entries from Italy (219), as well as Germany, Lithuania, Austria, France, Ireland, Poland, Australia, Russia, Switzerland, Mauritius, South Africa, Portugal and Spain (745 entries). In the Americas, Canada, the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay and Argentina are the countries with the greatest presence, and many entries from Asia were also received. The high level of participation by artists from all five continents confirms the international recognition that the competition now enjoys, partly thanks to support from the Latin American Design Association (ALADI), as well as the publicity it is given by other leading organisations such as the Design Council of Great Britain, the Israeli Illustration Association and Design Austria. The event has received coverage on 225 websites, graphics-design blogs and in the mainstream and specialist press in 40 countries, while social networks have acted as a nexus for graphics designers, art schools, graphics communities and trade journals.

A figure of a sailor with a bottle-shaped silhouette wins the Francisco Mantecón design award see News

The first prize in the Galician poster-design competition has been won by Sebastian Büsching from Germany « Over 1,600 entries were sent in by designers from all over the world

M. MATO . Vigo

Francisco Mantecón First-Prize WinnerWith a naïf style, the German designer Sebastian Büsching won one of the most coveted prizes in Spanish design yesterday, the international Francisco Mantecón competition, which the Galician winery Terras Gauda has organised for the last nine years. The winning design consisted of a figure of a sailor with a bottle-shaped silhouette, drawn with clever, simple lines and high contrast between the cyan background and white figure. He wins a cash prize of 10,000 euros and his poster will be used as the winery’s corporate image next year.

In their report, the jury highlighted the "original design", reinforcing "Terras Gauda’s commitment" to be a "benchmark in poster design". Since Modesto Vázquez Prada won the first edition of the event with his work "This Opening", the award has increased in both the value of the prizes and the event’s prestige. This year, 1,654 entries were received from all over the world — 225 more than for the last edition.

Besides the first prize for the Berlin-based artist Sebastian Büsching, the jury awarded the first Port of Vigo Foundation runners-up prize to Rafaella Troiero, while the second runners-up prize went to Diana Celeste Santos from Portugal. Inikernet Solutions (San Sebastián) also won a special mention. All three won 2,000 euros each.

Worldwide impact

Terras Gauda has stressed the impact of the competition in the international media. In Europe, the country with the most entries this year was Italy (219), with particularly “relevant” participation by designers from Germany, Lithuania, Austria, France, Ireland, Poland and Russia, among other European countries. This year there were more entries from abroad than from within Spain. Spanish designers sent in 745 of the 1,654 entries.

Entries were received from all the other continents as well as Europe, confirming in the winery’s view “the prestige that the competition has achieved internationally”, contributing towards its "consolidation among the major annual events in graphic design and poster design".

The winners of the first prize in recent years have been Angel Luis González; Taber Calderón (United States); Thomas Pion (Belgium); Shima Takahiro (Japan); Jordi Martín Figuerda, José Manuel Puga Molina and Modesto Vázquez Prada.

The prize-giving ceremony took place yesterday in Vigo, at an event attended by leading politicians, Terras Gauda executives and over 500 personalities from Galicia’s cultural, social and business spheres.

Francisco Mantecón First-prize WinnerVIGO/LAVOZ. Yesterday, Sebastian Büsching from Germany was announced as the winner of the Francisco Mantecón poster-design competition, which the winery Terras Gauda has organised for the last nine years. The jury’s task was no easy one, according to the chairman, José María Fonseca, as around 1,600 entries were received from over 50 different countries. The winner was awarded a diploma and given a cheque for 10,000 euros, at an event held at Vigo Maritime Centre, attended by the Galician president, Alberto Núñez Feijoo.

A new feature this year, besides having an exhibition space in keeling with the competition’s impact, has been a statuette, designed by Buciños, received by the winner, the two runners-up and the special mention. The piece is a bronze bust of the late multidisciplinary artist after whom the competition is named.

In addition to the cash prize, the winning entry will be used as Terras Gauda’s corporate image over the coming year.

The first runner-up was the Italian designer Rafaella Troireo, the second was Diana Celeste Santos from Portugal, and the special mention for the San Sebastian design studio Inikernet Solutions, each receiving a cheque for 2,000 euros.

Emilio Gil, chair of the Spanish Design Professionals Association, was the jury sponsor. He was joined by Corina Porro, Enrique Costas, Agustín Quevedo, Pilar Barreiro and last year’s winner, Ángel Luis González.

REPORT
Soledad Antón

Turning point. Next year, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Francisco Mantecón poster-design competition, the organisers have something special in mind, although this year certainly had its moments too.

prize-giving ceremonyAs José María Fonseca said yesterday, at long last having a fitting stage (the Maritime Centre) to display the hundreds of works submitted (1,600 from over 50 different countries) represents a turning point for an event whose international impact continues to grow. “We’re not Poland or the United States yet,” Fonseca said, “but in a very short time we’ve managed to slip in among the big names.”

While Terras Gauda’s commander in chief was effusive in his thanks, particularly to the host, Corina Porro, down in the packed stalls a lot of creative types were struggling to hide their nerves as they waited for the jury’s decision to be announced.

Before the announcement was made that the 2010 Mantecón would have a German accent (Sebastian Büsching), there was still time to get even more anxious. Three quarters o fan hour is how long the speeches lasted, by Corina Porro, Alberto Núñez Feijoo — with pithy interjections from the master of ceremonies for the evening, Fernando Ónega — and, the surprise of the event, Marcos Mantecón, who, in the absence of his mother, Pilar Barreiro, told some anecdotes from the life of Paco Mantecón, as has now become a traditional part of the programme.

Fourteen years!. That — exclamation mark included — is all the time Marcos said he had to enjoy being with his father. “Not very long,” he added. Although it was long enough to retain a memory of “our games and fights... and also his support to boost my self-esteem. I remember his ability to make me feel important, to make me sociable, just like he was. When he died I was left completely drained of blood and energy.”

Marcos recalled his father’s passion for the world of wine, which he claimed to have inherited from him: “He would have been proud of me, to know that I’m close to finishing my studies to be a vine grower.”

Corina Porro explained that she had picked up the gauntlet thrown down by Fonseca to find a home for the exhibition of posters after seeing the conditions in which they were exhibited before, all piled up at the winery in O Rosal, surrounded by vats and bottles. “I wondered whether this would be a suitable venue, but I think the walls speak for themselves,” she said.

She also noted that the same location that «was once the departure point for so many Galicians, who emigrated leaving their loved ones behind, should today have become a meeting point for poster designers from all five continents.”

To round off the evening, the lifetime secretary of the jury, Paulino Novo, revealed the names of the winners. The first prize (10,000 euros) went to the Berlin-based Sebastian Busching, while the runners-up prizes were for Rafaella Troiero from Italy and Diana Celeste Santos from Portugal. The Basque studio Inikernet Solutions won a special mention. They each received a cheque for 2,000 euros. All the winners were given a bronze bust of Mantecón, designed by Buciños. This was the final new feature of an evening of new developments.

prize-giving ceremonyLast night the Terras Gauda Group once again proved its ability to attract attention by filling the Vigo Maritime Centre to the rafters with all the guests who didn’t want to miss the awards ceremony for the ninth edition of the Fransico Mantecón International poster design competition.

The eventm which was presided over by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, with the chair of the Vigo Port Authority, Corina Porro, as the host, highlighted the ever-increasing international impact of the competition, with entries this year having come in from 58 countries.

The success is double, not only because each year more people from all ambits of life in southern Galicia attend the cultural event, at which José María Fonseca is clearly the star, but also because this edition broke the record for the number of participants, with 1,654 artists having sent in entries, currently on show in a special exhibition at the Maritime Centre.

The winner of the ninth edition is the German artist Sebastian Büsching, who not only received a cash prize of 10,000 euros but will also see his poster used as the winery’s corporate image for 2011. The two runners-up prizes of 2,000 euros each went to Rafaella Troeiro from Italy and Diana Celeste Santos from Portugal. The entry by Inikernet Solutions of San Sebastián won a special mention.

The Galicia-born journalist Fernando Ónega was the master of ceremonies at an event in which Francisco Mantecón’s only son, Marcos Mantecón, participated for the first time, acting on behalf of his mother, Pilar Barreiro.

Ónega deployed some typical Galician wit to review national and regional current affairs before saying that Terras Gauda’s future will continue to be marked by growth as a result of the firm’s business strategy to diversify with quality products and a commitment to innovation. He outlined the personality of the group’s founder, José María Fonseca, saying that "without a man like him the company would not exist", stressing his human qualities and character as an "example of initiative in times of prostration".

Fonseca, in turn, remembered Mantecón’s own personality.

The exhibition, which includes posters received from 58 countries, is a showcase for the latest trends in contemporary graphic design.

This year the organisers have received 1,650 entries — 225 more than in 2009 — confirming the success of the initiative, which this year has been distinguished with the seal of institutional support by the ALADI, the Latin American Design Association. The prizes on offer total €16,000 in cash: €10,000 for the winner and €2,000 each for the two runners-up and special mention.

Terras Gauda’s initiative is part of a tradition of sponsorship by wineries, best known internationally by the collection of labels begun by Baron Philippe Rothschild at the end of the Second World War, with works by leading 20th-century artists. Leading examples in Spain include the collections of Bodegas Enate (Sotomontano, Aragon) and the Vivamco Dynasty (Rioja), part of whose valuable collection is currently on show at the Madrid wine centre Lavinia (Calle Ortega y Gasset, 16). Each year the Spanish winery Terras Gauda organises the Francisco Mantecón International Poster Design Competition. This year is the tenth edition. Cash prizes are on offer for the winners (given that the wine industry has been as affected by the recession as most others, the first prize is a more modest sum this year), but the real prize is the opportunity to work with the company. As the organisers have said, Russian Designers have also taken part in recent years. The chance to take part in the Francisco Mantecón International Poster Design Competition is one not to be missed. LATIN AMERICAN DESIGN ASSOCIATION GRANTS ITS ALADI SEAL OF INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT TO THE NINTH FRANCISCO MANTECÓN INTERNATIONAL POSTER DESIGN COMPETITION

The prestigious Latin American Design Association has granted its ALADI seal of institutional support to the ninth Francisco Mantecón International Poster Design Competition, organised by Bodegas TERRAS GAUDA.

The chair of the Latin American Design Association, Prof. Paolo I.G. Bergomi, expressed his commitment to contribute towards spreading word of the competition among the association’s extensive network of associate designers throughout Latin America.

TERRAS GAUDA is calling upon over 15,000 graphic designers, design studios, associations and universities in Latin America, where the participation is high every year, with over 200 entries.

In 2009, the jury selected works by designers from Argentina, Ecuador and Venezuela among the 33 finalists, who recently took part in an exhibition at the Ritz hotel in Madrid Turing the presentation of the ninth edition of the competition.

The Maritime Centre — where the jury will meet this year. all the competing posters will be on show and the prize-giving ceremony will be held, following an agreement between Vigo Port Authority and the winery TERRAS GAUDA— will be witness to the high level of participation by Latin American designers, as the Port of Vigo is an entry and exit point for thousands of Latin Americans.

The Spanish winery TERRAS GAUDA is offering 16,000 euros in cash prizes (10,000 euros for the winner and 2,000 euros each for the two-runners up and special mention). The closing date for sending in entries is 30 September.

Bodegas Terras Gauda - Personalities from Galicia meet in Madrid to enjoy wine and design posters

ISRAEL GARCÍA-JUEZ

I was invited to the Ritz by the Terras Gauda winery for the presentation of the ninth edition of the Francisco Mantecón International Poster Design Competition.

I arrived — right on time — just the former Foreign Affairs minister (among many other offices under her belt) Ana Palacio was leaving. She was smiling, back with her once famous hair-do, which ten years ago was bald as a result of chemotherapy, a side-effect that she did nothing to disguise, much to the admiration of her colleagues in Strasbourg and elsewhere.

Among those looking at the competing posters from earlier editions of the competition was José María Iñigo, now looking considerably larger than he used to. As large, in fact, as his fame when he was on TV or more recently with the success of his travel magazine.

A lot of rather pretentious people were commenting on the artwork. Among those who actually knew what they were talking about were the graphic designer Pep Carré, with his creative’s rectangular glasses, and Emilio Gil, designer and chair of this year's jury, as well as the design director of Elle magazine, Javier Martínez-Vidal.

As you well know, you can be Galician by birth or condition, which may explain why those attending the event included the designer Modesto Lomba, the film director Elías Querejeta (not yet moved to dig up the graves of the Spanish civil war), Rafael Ansón, Amancio Prada and Antonio Mingote; the People’s Party treasurer, José Manuel Romay Beccaría, the chairman of the National Ports Authority, Fernando González Laxe, the MP Ana Pastor, the senator Manuel Fraga and the ambassadors of Luxembourg, Ivory Coast, Bosnia and Egypt, among others.

At the back of the room, on one side of the platform, Manuel Fraga was sitting surrounded by a group of people approaching to pay their respects hello as if he were a Mafia don. He was carrying a walking stick that rather than using for support he wielded like a chieftain’s staff. It has a sword concealed inside it, or so I’ve been told. When you see him, you subconsciously straighten your back and walk more briskly to match some of the man's energy – a true young old timer, who never seems to stop. He even stayed awake during the speeches.

The master of ceremonies was Fernando Ónega. He explained that he didn’t want to be the presenter so as not to upset the self-proclaimed appointee for the job, Belén Esteban. After a few words of praise for the winery and others of thanks to those attending, he said that we were a group that deserved an entry in the Guinness Book of Records, for the most people drinking for free. The response from the audience was a loud cheer and everyone topping up their glasses, so as not to prove him wrong. He then introduced José María Fonseca, the chairman of Terras Gauda, who cited his winery as an example of the sustainable economy, since every day we drink more and more. He was presented as “that gentleman who looks like the bishop of Caldas and has the intellect of a sage”. I don’t know about his intellect, but he certainly does look like a bishop, with his well-fed and well-lubricated appearance, and the lo-o-o-o-ng pauses straight out of a homily. The difference was that instead of dressing in purple he was wearing a decorated billiard-table-green bow tie, reminding me that although Inocencio Arias had been invited I couldn’t find him, to compare which of the two had the most chic bow tie, as the tie Josemi was wearing was just an ordinary one.
